Unpublished and Unrecorded Lyrics

I have been a closet song writer since the 60s. I sang a few at clubs and private parties along the way.  But none of my songs has ever been professionally recorded. So let’s say they’re like Tex Ritter’s bowl-weevil, just looking for a home.  Although all my books and essays are religious and academic, my songs are all down to earth, either country, blues, or maybe alternative.  Some have tunes. Others not. I am hoping to connect with an artist looking for new material. Contact me if you find something here you like.

Let’s Go to Jamaica     © 2013 L.F.Massey

Demo recording available-  steel drum and  caribbean rhythm

Sometimes it’s a challenge to crawl out of bed,  then go out and earn my pay.

Lost in illusion and mass confusion, I barely find my way.

I look around and all I see is time slipping away.

Life is way too short, so let’s not waste another day.

Let’s go to Jamaica, just you and me  we deserve a little fun.

Let’s sail to the islands, relax in the Caribbean sun.

We’ll dance to a reggae band on a tropical night with the full moon smiling above.

Let’s fly away together tonight and celebrate our love.

I sit at my desk sippin’ my coffee,  my mind drifting away.

There’s too much working and not enough playing, so tell me what do you say?

Why don’t we jump on a plane tonight  and get away from it all?

You and me on a sandy beach, baby, we’ll have a ball.

Let’s go to Jamaica, just you and me  we deserve a little fun.

Let’s sail to the islands, relax in the Caribbean sun.

We’ll dance to a reggae band on a tropical night with the full moon smiling above.

Let’s fly away together tonight and celebrate our love.

Let’s go to Jamaica, Let’s go to Jamaica,  Let’s go to Jamaica

And celebrate our love.

Just Friends      © 2013 L.F. Massey

You send me flowers like we’re deeply in love.

We sit for hours and never say a word.

We have so little in common any more.

I wish we felt the way we did before.

I hold your hand but there’s no response at all.

We take a walk and try to talk about our lives.

Nothing seems important enough to even try.

I just can’t help these tears in my eyes.

Maybe we can just be friends.

Maybe we can just be friends.

If we’re never going to make it as anything else-

Not partners, or lovers, or significant others,

Maybe we can just be friends.

You can’t deny we have feelings for each other;

It may be mostly like a sister and a brother.

I am sure whatever our relationship is called

We used to call it wonderful- the best times of all.

I turn the pages full of old photographs.

I want to call and ask “Do you remember when?”

I try to guess our ages in pictures that have faded.

I wish we could go back there again.

Maybe we can just be friends.

Maybe we can just be friends.

If we’re never going to make it as anything else-

Not partners, or lovers, or significant others,

Maybe we can just be friends.

Maybe we can just be friends.

Maybe we can just be friends.

If we’re never going to make it as anything else-

Not partners, or lovers, or significant others,

Maybe we can just be friends.

Nowhere To Run                        © 2013 L.F.Massey

I drive the streets in the dead of night,  picking up rides under neon lights.

The sun comes up at the break of day; I can see in their eyes they’re wasting away.

The sun beats down on the city streets; asphalt melts in the summer heat.

A poor man begs with an outstretched hand, and he knows you’re never gonna understand.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away.

We came here looking for a pot of gold; ain’t no better than the place before.

Thought we’d left all our troubles behind. Maybe it’s as good as we’ll ever find.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away

Tell your daughters and your sons they’re not the only ones

Who gaze at the setting sun and long to be somewhere else.

What a terrible price we pay wishing our very lives away,

And when we lose the things we love we blame someone else.

The world turns faster every day; I wonder how long we can live this way.

Some folks say that the end is near; No wonder our children are living in fear.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run, come take us away.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to run, nowhere to run,  I reckon I’ll stay.

It’s All Over        © 2013 L.F. Massey

Demo recording available.  Rock or country.  For female vocalist (one alternate line for male).

Don’t tell me you don’t understand me.

Stop pretending you can’t live without me.

What makes you think we are right for each other?

You don’t know a single thing about me.

I wouldn’t want you to be offended.

But this relationship has ended.

There’s no us anymore.

We’ll never be like before.

Don’t phone me up no more.

It’s all over.

There’s nothing more to say.

I’ll just be on my way.

Don’t try to make me stay.

It’s all over.

We don’t have the same dreams or ambitions.

So don’t insult me with demands and conditions.

There’s nothing left of our love to salvage.

I’m sick and tired of this ego competition.

So please try to take it like a man. (Please listen to me if you can)

What part of no don’t you understand?

Stop saying we can work things through.

I don’t want nothing that reminds me of you.

I’m giving back your front  door key.

This is the last you will see of me.

So pay attention now to what I say.

I don’t think you ever loved me anyway.

REPEAT CHORUS

It’s all over , over, over, it’s over

It’s all over, over, over, it’s  over

It’s all over , over, over, it’s over

Counting  one, two, three, say goodbye to me!

It’s all over.

Signs         © 2013 L.F.Massey

Blues, demo recording available

Morning red and evening grey sends a traveler on his way.

Morning grey and evening red brings rain down on his head

I’m damned if I do, and damned if I don’t.

If she tells me she’s leavin why keep hopin’ she won’t.

She’s gonna leave me.

My baby’s gonna leave me.

She’s gonna leave me,

Believe me I can read the signs

Drink your beer then a shot of liquor, they say you’ll never be sicker.

Have your liquor and chase it with beer, they say you got nothin to fear.

All that advice ain’t no help at all

I’m out on the edge and feeling small.

I think she’s gonna leave me.

My baby’s gonna leave me.

She’s gonna leave me,

Believe me I can read the signs

Red and yella will kill a fella; red on black venom lacks.

Lefty loosy righty tighty; step on a crack, break your mother’s back.

Well, every proverb I’ve ever known

Is contradicted by another one.

But she’s gonna leave me.

My baby’s gonna leave me.

She’s gonna leave me,

Believe me I can read the signs

(LEAD BREAK)

She’s gonna leave me.

My baby’s gonna leave me.

She’s gonna leave me,

Believe me I can read the signs

Ohhh, she’s gonna leave me.

My baby’s gonna leave me.

She’s gonna leave me, believe me

I can see it in her eyes.

TONGUES OF FIRE      © 2013 L.F.Massey

She’s a straight talking woman; always says what she thinks.

You can back her in a corner but you’ll never make her blink.

She’s a silver-tongued devil with an eye for the truth;

A permanent anchor on the six o’clock news.

CHORUS

Tongues of fire, how they burn in our souls.

Tongues of fire, burning out of control.

Tongues of fire, set the world aflame.

Tongues of fire, they’re all the same.

He’s a smooth talking man with a lot on his mind.

Don’t open up the closet, you don’t know what you’ll find.

He’s rated number one in popularity poles.

But once he’s in power you’ll be out in the cold.

CHORUS

He’s a Holy Ghost preacher on cable TV,

Broadcasts a message out across the sea.

Just send him your money and he’ll promise to pray,

And God will surely bless you in every way.

CHORUS

LAY IT ON ME STRAIGHT        © 2013 L.F.Massey

I’ve got questions, nobody’s got the answers.

Lay it on me straight Jack, tell us all the truth.

Psychic astrologers and spooky necromancers,

Lay it on me straight Jack, I’m list’nin to you.

Preachers and doctors and greedy self-advancers,

They promise you salvation but they cannot cure the cancer.

People are people and nothing’s gonna change it.

I’d love to go to heaven if my agent can arrange it.

Boot scooters, truck drivers, farmers and ranchers,

Lay it on me straight Jack, tell us all the truth.

Bankers and lawyers and nude exotic dancers,

Lay it on me straight Jack, I’m list’nin to you.

Divers, survivors and wealthy fancy-pantsers,

Deep down inside they’re all lonely second-chancers.

People are people and nothing’s gonna change it.

I’d love to go to heaven if my agent can arrange it.

Everybody wants some action while they’re on a roll.

But I don’t want ‘em in my head, can’t trust ‘em with my soul.

So who’ll care about me when I’m lonely and cold?

Who’s gonna be there when I’m helpless and old?

Just a few honest answers to a few important questions.

Lay it on me straight Jack, tell us all the truth.

But bad news and politics just give me indigestion.

Lay it on me straight Jack, tell us all the truth.

THAT’S WHAT I THINK ABOUT THAT          © 2013   L.F. Massey

Cajun style, male voice

A Bloody Mary’s just vodka and soup,

And I could live on that –  if I had to.

My friends all tell me it ain’t very healthy,

But I ain’t getting fat – and I don’t want to.

So, keep your advice, it’s all very nice,

Don’t try to tell me how to live my life.

I’m just telling you where I’m at,

That’s what I think about that.

This Cajun boy knows how to survive,

And I ain’t afraid to do what I got to.

Gator tail makes a mighty a good snack,

And I can sell it in town if I need to.

So, keep your advice, it’s all very nice,

Just don’t try to tell me how to live my life.

I’m just telling you where I’m at,

That’s what I think about that.

Ain’t got a resume but I got lot to offer

If you give me a chance – I ain’t lazy.

I’ve been watching the news, about how I should vote

And I can tell you this – they’re all crazy.

One man talks about going to war,

Just because we can – but why should we?

Another one claims he could make me wealthy,

If I gave him my money – but why would he?

So, keep your advice, it’s all very nice,

Don’t try to tell me how to live my life.

I’m just telling you where I’m at,

That’s what I think about that.

That’s what I think about that.

That’s what I think about that.

I’m just telling you where I’m at,

That’s what I think about that.

Valentine’s Day    © 2013 L.F. Massey

What if I said I miss you?

What if said I’m feeling blue?

What if I said I need you?

Wouldn’t you say you need me too?

I know I’m not the best at choosing words to say.

By the time I find the right words the moment has slipped away.

I can only say I love you as I leave this message today.

And I never stop thinking of you, you’re the only one for me.

Happy Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day, and riding on the subway,

Couples holding hands and kissing remind me of how much I’m missing you

And you’re so far away.

It’s Valentine’s Day.

(Interlude)

What if I said I’m lonely?

What if I said there’s no one but you?

What if I said I love you?

Wouldn’t you say you love me too?

I know I’m not the best at choosing words to say.

By the time I find the right words the moment has slipped away.

I can only say I love you as I leave this message today.

And I never stop thinking of you, you’re the only one for me.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

CHORUS

What if I said I need you?

What if said I’m still in love with you?

And I can’t wait to see you.

Wouldn’t you say you miss me too?

Happy Valentine’s Day.

There’s something about you baby,

I’m not sure what it’s all about.

You absolutely have my attention;

But I can’t quite figure it out.

Is it the way you walk? The way you smile?

The smell of your hair?  Your confident style?

Some crazy little thing that I can’t explain?

Whatever it is, it’s driving me insane.

I’m head over heels in love.

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

I’m overboard in a deep blue sea

And there ain’t no way to rescue me,

I’m in love and if you want me I’m totally yours.

From the moment that I first saw you

I knew you were the one for me.

And I admit I can’t explain it;

I’m like an apple falling from tree.

Is it the way you walk? The way you smile?

The smell of your hair?  Your confident style?

The crazy little things that I can’t explain?

Whatever it is, it’s driving me insane.

I’m head over heels in love.

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

I’m overboard in a deep blue sea

And there ain’t no way to rescue me,

I’m in love, and if you want me I’m totally yours.
